News from Caroline Janny in Singapore
Dear Ladies,
I hope you are all well. We have been in Singapore for almost 2 months and I am
starting to catch up with all the things I want to do.
First of all, I want to thank you for you for your gift, and here is where I
spent the money.
My husband and I spent a couple of days in Boston, and I convinced him to take
me to Keep Sake Quilting . You
are probably all familiar with this shop, if not go to their website and request
the catalogue, it is full of inspiring ideas. There I purchased some “jelly
thumbs” (they look like wine gum and are soft and “chewy“), a bundle of
Christmas fabrics, some pre-cut 5 ½” floral squares and a catalogue of quilting
patterns on CD.
But of course, I wanted to be sure that I did not under spent, so I ordered a
new book: “Material obsession” (full of lovely quilts, with unusual prints and
colours). If you cannot resist, it can be found on Amazon (I just realised that
there is now a second book…). picture

So once again, thank you very much.
Now Singapore; apart from the fact that it is hot, actually very hot (would you
believe that I am grateful for the rain or an overcast sky?) I found a couple
of quilt shops:
Quilt’n’Calicoes and Quilts n' Sew Forth not far away from Arab
Street, a magic place for silk, satin, batik… So there’s plenty to fulfil my
fabric addiction. I also found yarn shops so everything is fine in this area
too.
One day while I was musing in a shopping centre (it is an easy way to cool
down), I found an Indonesian batik shop. There was a group of ladies comparing
prints and speaking about scraps. Magic word to my ears, I approached the group
and asked them what they were going to use the fabric for. And another magic
word, they were planning for a quilt. So only one thing to do, I introduced
myself, chatted a couple minutes, and before I knew I was invited to join them
the next Tuesday. We are doing a Bear Paw quilt with Indonesian batiks. Each
of us cut the necessary amount of squares for the whole quilt and then we
exchanged our cut squares. No time will be wasted as we are preparing for a
“retreat” to assemble the whole top. We spent a day sewing, eating, chatting…
We were all actions and here is a sneak peek of the result: (picture

If you want to see how this develop you can go to my
flick , I will try to post pictures once it is finished.
And look at that, we had a new addition to the family: Lao Shi (teacher in
Mandarin). This kitten has been with us for just over a couple of weeks, and
she has already developed a strong taste for fabric! (picture

Apart from that, as an at home mum, I spent my time driving the kids around,
supervising the home work (there’s a lot!), helping at school with Knitting Club
and outings. From the children’s point of view, they reach the conclusion that
life in Singapore is not that different, you still have to go to school, do your
homework, brush your teeth…. OK once everything is done, you can go to the
swimming pool and even at 8.00 at night it is still nice and warm! And not to
mentioned all the exciting countries we will visit; we just came back from Bali
and cannot wait to go back.
I wish you all the best, and will probably send some updates in the future.
Take care,
Caroline
